This month we are still celebrating the arrival of spring. April the 2nd is World Autism and Awareness Day. In the US we dedicate the entire month. April is also Garden month. This is the perfect time to plant a sensory garden. When planting your garden remember to include plants to satisfy each sense. Build your garden would be raised beds, paths with interesting textured stones and secret safe spaces, of course. To help reduce noise plant ornamental grasses and bamboo both make great noise breaks. You can also use trellies with vines such as jasmine and honeysuckle. These provide fragrance and pops of color as well. Both vines are available in a variety of colors. You can plant elephant ears, arellias and split leaf philodendrons for a variety of leaf shapes. Planting velvety leaf plants, succlents and rex bogonias offer varied textures. The addition of a garden arch with built in benches gives a secret place when covered with a fast growing vine such as trumpet and Virginia creeper which atract humming birds and butterflies. For aded interest place a water feature such a fountain, a fish pond with a waterfall, bells and wind chimes. For taste plant blueberries, strawberries, dewberries and Mulberies to name a few. Planning and planting your sensory garden is a fun and exciting activity!
